Research

I did a lot of research on my topic to hear other peoples stories. I found that this isn't a rare occurrence. Sheikh Ikrima Sabri of Jerusalem was not allowed to leave his Israel. He was the head of the Higher Islamic Committee in Jerusalem. He was not allowed to leave his country for good reason. He did not do anything wrong, and Sabri said that "Such decisions were instated by regimes that ruled during dark ages of history, and now are used by a system of oppression and apartheid." I also found that there was some good reason for people not being allowed back into their country. For example, Michael Savage of the U.K. is not being allowed back into the U.K. He is one of many on their list of people not allowed back. Some of the reasons being: "allegedly fostering extremism or hatred, including Muslim extremists, a right-wing American radio host, an Israeli settler and jailed Russian gang members." I can understand this, but I still think there is a better way to handle it. Maybe letting these people back into their country would help them be better people if they get to be back "home". I don't think it is ever fair to ban someone from their home. There has got to be some way to solve the problems. To let them in, have them sign a contract promising to behave, and follow the law, and if they break the contract, then there is good reason to not allow them back into the country.

UDHR #13 states that...

  •  (1) Everyone has the right to freedom of movement and residence within the borders of each state
  •  (2) Everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country.

My Connection to the Topic

When looking through the Universal Declaration of Human Rights I had a lot of trouble picking one that I could connect to. But when I read article #13, I recalled old news stories. I remember hearing about people not being able to leave or enter North Korea. When two American journalists were right near the North Korean border, they got captured and weren't allowed to leave. It scared me to even think about this happening to me. It made me wonder how scary this would be, and terrifying to someone. It frustrated me that this UDHR didn't stop things. I found that this article was easily applied for me, and I wanted to spread word about it. I don't want this to happen to anyone else again. The two journalists Euna Lee and Laura Ling will never recover from what happened to them. This article should be largely enforced. That is why I wanted to spread the knowledge to others, so this never happens again.
